This was a fun backyard adventure for us. We had no clue there was going to be an eclipse that night. We found out when I got a text from my Dad, Frank, with a heads up that the eclipse was about to start. I was exhausted and half asleep, but Freddy pushed me to get up. We set up a couple of seats outside and started looking up the peak time for the eclipse. That’s when we noticed that everyone online kept mentioning a blood moon eclipse.
We realized that this was a rare opportunity to catch an eclipse and a blood moon at the same time. All of a sudden things went from 0 to 100 in our minds. Freddy rushed to get the tripod and the digital camera, and I worked to get the backyard set up. It was 10:30 pm, and some of the peak times were 11:28 pm and 12:12 am. We were going to be out there for a little while.
Being in South Florida, and living next to a lake, there are times of the year that mosquitos really, really suck. Lately to fight mosquitos off I’ve been using a new product I found at Lowes called the Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller. There are two versions, the one that I think works the best is this one with the little liquid canister. It is a scentless, spray less, and mess less way to protect yourself form mosquitos this year. I’ve always been a mosquito magnet and this has really helped make it so that I almost don’t get bit. One thing I recommend is to set it out a few minutes before you’re going to use your patio. It’s not the end of the world if you can’t put it out early. But I have noticed a difference and try to put it out if at all possible.
I was dead tired, so I fell asleep for some parts, but thankfully Freddy was able to wake me up to watch any big moments. We also got lucky to catch a lot of it on camera. We hope you enjoy our little compilation video of the eclipse. It’s one of our first times filming something like this and we learned a lot.
We want to catch more video of the night sky this year. We’re going to try to catch some cool meteor showers this year. We want to take advantage of the fact that we’re in South Florida. We can drive out to some pretty remote locations and catch some pretty wide shots of the sky.
